Public understanding is shaped and can be distorted by how journalists, commentators and bloggers use data and numbers.
Journalists must heed their responsibility and strive to present data and statistics accurately and intelligibly.

The RSS gives awards for excellence in journalism and with getstats is extending recognition to media staff who use data
presentation and visualization techniques to best effect. We are working with the National Council for the Training of
Journalists and university schools of media and journalism to establish a benchmark of competence in reporting numbers. As the regulation of newspaper journalism is debated, getstats in collaboration with editors and broadcasters is establishing
reference points to good practice and useful guides to avoiding pitfalls.
